The ElecLink project will operate two converter stations – one on each side of the Channel – to convert electricity between High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC). HVAC is used in each country’s transmission systems, and HVDC is used for sending electricity along the cable through the Channel Tunnel.

Latest technology

ElecLink will use state-of-the-art, tried and tested Voltage Source Conversion technology designed to achieve the highest possible standards of availability and reliability.

ElecLink will use HVDC technology to connect two High Voltage AC electricity systems separated by the English Channel and avoid the need to synchronise the two interconnected AC networks. HVDC cable enables efficient transportation of electricity over large distances and is highly controllable with operational benefits on both sides of the Channel.

No visual impact

No new pylons will blight the landscape as the HDVC cable will be safely buried along all of the 14km route from Eurotunnel at Cheriton to the National Grid substation at Sellindge.

The trench for the cable will be up to 1.2m wide by 1.5m deep, with a working corridor generally up to 5m wide to allow for access.

Two existing substations are currently being extended – one on each side of the Channel – to provide a point of connection to the national electricity networks and transform the voltage of electricity to make that connection.

A 14km HVAC cable would run between Sellindge substation and the Folkestone converter station, then the HVDC runs 51km via the Channel Tunnel to the Coquelles converter station. A further 3.5km HVAC current is required to connect the Coquelles converter station to the French equivalent of the National Grid at Les Mandarins substation.
